Frequently Asked Questions
There’s a reason why TED is also known as Graves’ eye disease. That’s because 90% of those that experience this inflammatory condition have hyperthyroidism . Around 1 in 3 people who suffer from the hyperthyroidism of Graves’ disease will see this ocular condition appear.
Because your eyelids may have a hard time closing with TED, your eyes are likely to have a hard time keeping themselves moisturized. This is especially true when you are sleeping. While drying out your corneas is not an immediate issue, it can occur faster than you think.
Your TED treatment may include specialized eye drops, a lubricating gel, or possibly surgery depending on how difficult it is for your eyelids to remain closed for long periods of time.
Only a small number of TED patients require surgery, which would require the expertise of an oculoplastic surgeon. These specialists would only consider these kinds of procedures when all other options have been exhausted. The surgeries can range from strabismus correction to eyelid retraction to orbital decompression depending on the symptoms you experience. If you are worried about complications that may arise from any of these procedures, we recommend you contact the oculoplastic specialist to talk you through each process so that you can feel more comfortable on the day of your operation.
A number of tests can determine why your specific TED symptoms are occurring. Dr. Andrew Orenberg will guide you through every examination in your lineup.
You don’t need to do much to get ready for your screening. Have your current glasses or contacts, a list of medications, and an overview of your medical history with you when you arrive. This will help us identify the most suitable tests for planning your TED treatment in Marblehead.
Based on your TED symptoms, Dr. Orenberg will give you a series of exams. These tests can include imaging, tomography, perimetry, and more. There won’t be any pain during these tests and you can continue with your daily routine after leaving the clinic. However, if you undergo the tonometry test to assess eye pressure, the doctor will use a numbing solution to ensure your comfort.
Most TED patients never need to have surgery, as most of the symptoms are manageable through your daily routine. If you smoke, your doctor will likely advise you to quit. Smoking is one of the leading inflammatory agents behind TED symptoms. Your doctor may also recommend artificial tears for dry eyes and sunglasses for light sensitivity. Beyond those adjustments, we may prescribe steroidal medication to manage your swelling and other factors directly causing your TED. If you have questions about whether your symptoms are too severe for these treatments, schedule a visit with us and we’ll discuss alternatives with you.
