Stay Ahead of Glaucoma
Screenings can detect this condition in its early stages.
If you are experiencing vision problems, a glaucoma screening may help detect early disease and prevent further progression to irreversible vision loss.
Checking In on Your Eyes
When figuring out your diagnosis, the results of these screenings will determine whether or not you can rule out glaucoma.
After your exam, we will recommend follow-up appointments or treatments as necessary to help alleviate your eye concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all! Our typical range of tests include various pain-free methods of examining your eyes for optic nerve damage. The only screening that may cause discomfort is our intraocular pressure test. This requires a numbing drop, which may burn upon instillation.
You don’t have to do much to get ready for your screening. Remember to bring your current glasses or contacts, list any medications you’re taking, and be prepared to discuss any changes in your recent medical history. We will supply a temporary case and solution for your appointment if you wear contacts. These tests usually take about two hours from check-in to check-out, so be sure to have that time slot cleared.
We will work with you to create a care plan based on the stage your glaucoma has reached. Expect to revisit your Salem eye specialist every six months to check on the progression of your ocular condition and update any treatments for new or worsening symptoms. Treatments can include eye drops or laser treatment for early stages of glaucoma, but advanced stages may require surgery.
If you experience headaches due to eye pressure or find your vision has become reduced or blurry, you should schedule a visit with us. Coming in for a screening is also advised if you see halos around lights, see blind spots, or lose peripheral vision. Getting a glaucoma screening can catch optic nerve damage early before it leads to irreversible vision loss. This is why we recommend coming in as soon as you can to address these symptoms, especially if they are severe. We also suggest screenings for those who have a family history of glaucoma but are not yet experiencing symptoms, as you may be at higher risk for the condition.
Prior to your exam, we’ll go over your medical history and decide which tests you need. Then, your Salem eye specialist will begin your examinations.
Perimetry: This test involves looking straight ahead and having spots of light shone in your periphery, which helps test vision impairment.
Visual Acuity: To evaluate the sharpness of your vision at different distances, you will read from an eye chart.
Optic Nerve Examination: If necessary, we dilate your pupils and the doctor examines the back of your eye where your optic nerve is located.
Eye Pressure Test: A small device will be used to measure your intraocular pressure.
Pachymetry: The doctor will measure your corneal thickness so that he can more accurately interpret your eye pressure readings.
Drainage Angle Exam: A gonioscopic test determines the angle between the cornea and the iris, checking for glaucoma development along the way.
Expect more than one test, as your symptoms may or may not be due to glaucoma. If we determine that your condition is not glaucomatous, we may recommend another set of tests.
With his patients, Dr. Andrew Orenberg emphasizes the importance of collaborative care. He builds strong connections between doctors and patients and collaborates with local providers for holistic patient well-being.
Having grown up on the North Shore, it was only natural for Dr. Orenberg to become a Salem eye specialist after 16 years of medical education.
