Keep Your Eyes Safe
Plaquenil may increase your chances of vision loss.
While rare, one side effect of Plaquenil is retinal damage. To avoid this, we recommend screening annually if you are on this medication.
Factoring in Your Prescription
We’ll conduct a visual field test and screen your eyes for signs of damage so we can prevent vision loss before it becomes severe.
Whether or not we find any problems, we’ll plan for future exams so long as you are on your current Plaquenil medication.

Frequently Asked Questions
Though people taking hydroxychloroquine are not usually prone to side effects, this prescription causes visual impairments on rare occasions. The risk of such conditions only increases as you age. In addition the longer you’ve been taking Plaquenil and your family medical history with retinal disease can be risk factors. Retinal damage of any kind can cause blindness if severe enough. Therefore, we cannot stress enough the importance of screening for ocular changes while taking Plaquenil. The period of time between repeat appointments will differ based on your current care plan.
When you come to our eye clinic near Salem, we offer a variety of pain-free methods to examine your eyes for any signs of decay or damage. This includes a dilated pupil exam, which will cause temporary light sensitivity and blurry vision. Dr. Orenberg will also administer a numbing drop to check your eye pressure during the exam.
Your screening requires minimal preparation. Please remember your current glasses or contacts, make a list of your medications, and be ready to discuss any updates to your medical history. If you wear contacts, we’ll provide a temporary case and solution for your appointment. Usually, these exams last around two hours from check-in to check-out for these tests, so make sure you have that time slot available.
We will work with you to create a care plan based on what stage your condition has reached. Expect a possible referral to a retina specialist to further evaluate your eyes. Treatments can vary based on how early we catch any conditions, but you’ll work with Dr. Orenberg to ensure you get the care you need. We may ask that you get in touch with your doctor about removing Plaquenil from your care plan.
We’ll review your medical history before your exam and determine the necessary tests. Next, your doctor will start conducting the examinations.
Retinal Examination: In order to examine the back of the eye, where the retina is located, it may be necessary to dilate your pupils.
Eye Pressure Test: Measuring ocular pressure via a tonometer can screen for glaucoma.
Perimetry: We will ask you to look straight ahead while we shine lights in your peripheral vision to test for vision impairment.
Visual Acuity: An eye chart will measure the clarity of your vision at different distances.
Retinal Imaging: Optos allows Dr. Orenberg to assess your retina and detect signs of diabetic retinopathy or other retinal conditions.
Optical Coherence Tomography: To examine each layer of your retina thoroughly, Dr. Orenberg will take cross-sectional images.
We may conduct multiple tests to determine if you are at risk of developing retinal problems. If we determine that you are currently safe to continue taking Plaquenil, we will schedule another appointment at our eye clinic near Salem as necessary.
