High Level Overview
Seeing Flashes and Floaters?
Those little spots you see in your field of vision are called floaters—pieces of your eye’s vitreous casting shadows on your retina.
Meanwhile, flashes happen when your vitreous pulls on your retina.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everyone has a chance to experience flashes and/or floaters in their lifetime, as they are usually a product of age. After you’ve turned 50, your risk of seeing floaters and flashes increases over time.
Beyond that, those with family histories of retinal detachment or tears are at risk. Being nearsighted or previously having uveitis will also have higher chances of seeing floaters or flashes. Thankfully, we offer eye floaters treatment in Marblehead to help you see more clearly.
Within our eyes, we have a fluid called the vitreous humor that keeps your eye’s shape. Sometimes, pieces of the vitreous pull away from the surface and solidify. When those pieces pass in front of your retina, they cast shadows on its center, the macula, creating the floaters that you see in your field of vision. These floaters are harmless and will usually settle out of your sight over time.
That same vitreous sometimes pulls on or rubs your retina, and this causes flashes of white light in your vision. Alternatively, kaleidoscopes, geometric patterns, or visual phenomena that may resemble heat waves or static are more often associated with ocular migraines rather than a vitreous detachment.
Floaters and flashes are common and not inherently harmful. However, you should contact us immediately for eye floaters treatment in Marblehead if you are seeing a sudden increase in either. Additionally, if you notice large gray spots covering part of your vision or your peripheral vision is darkened by a shadow, let us know right away. These can be indications of a detached or torn retina, which needs to be treated immediately to avoid permanent loss of vision.
Since flashes and floaters are not harmful on their own, the most important part of your visit will be checking for any signs of retinal damage. Dr. Andrew Orenberg will lead you through each part of your eye exam to ensure your retinas are safe from detachment or tearing.
You don’t need to do much to prepare for your eye floaters treatment in Marblehead. Bring your current glasses or contacts, a list of medications, and an overview of your medical history. Dr. Orenberg will use this information to determine the most suitable tests for you.
Your tests may range from retinal imaging to optical coherence tomography, which will help detect any damage to the retinal tissue. If no tears are present and your retina is where it needs to be, then you can move on to the monitoring stage. However, if we do find damage, we will need to get your retina reattached and sealed as soon as possible. This will involve a referral to a retina specialist to perform the necessary laser treatment or surgery.
After we’ve given you a green light to return to your day as normal, you won’t need to come back to the office for another 6 to 8 weeks. If your floaters have not improved by then, we will do another examination. This eye floaters treatment in Marblehead will repeat as necessary to ensure that your retinas are still in proper condition. It’s possible that your floaters are simply stubborn, and while they can be annoying, you can rest easy knowing that they’re harmless.
