Frequently Asked Questions
Pediatric vision care is a part of most insurance plans, and this includes coverage for screenings. However, keep in mind that the screening itself may find early onset eye disease. Subsequent treatment may differ based on your provider’s policies.
Since children’s eyes are still developing, the risk for eye disease is lower, making visits every 2 to 3 years often sufficient. However, if your family has a history of ocular conditions or you wear glasses yourself, annual exams can keep track of your child’s eyes as they grow.
There is not much your child needs to do to prepare for their eye exam. If they’re already wearing glasses or contacts, remember to bring them. You’ll also need to have a list of current medications and their medical history ready. Your child will need to remove their contacts or glasses during the eye exam. Your pediatric eye doctor in Marblehead will provide a temporary case and solution for their appointment.
Even children know how delicate eyes are, so we understand if they’re feeling anxious about their first screening. You can let your child know that our pediatric eye doctor in Marblehead has a range of eye tests available, and they don’t need to worry about any of them hurting. We want to inform parents, however, that drops may be administered to dilate the eyes and to check intraocular pressure. These drops may burn upon installation and some may cause temporary light sensitivity and blurry vision.
Routine eye exams commonly detect nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. We will also check for:
- cataracts (clouding of the lens)
- glaucoma (high eye pressure damaging the optic nerve)
- amblyopia (lazy eye)
- retinopathy (damage to blood vessels in the retina)
With your pediatric eye doctor in Marblehead, you’ll be able to ensure your child’s vision remains unimpaired throughout their growth stages.
Prior to the examination, we’ll evaluate both your child’s and your family’s medical history to determine the required tests.
Visual Acuity: This test involves your child reading from an eye chart to evaluate their vision at different distances.
Eye Muscle Movement: We examine your child’s eye movements to ensure they’re functioning and coordinating properly.
Refraction: To determine your child’s prescription for glasses or contact lenses (if necessary), we rely on the use of lenses.
Retinal Examination: If necessary, we will dilate your child’s pupils so the doctor can examine the retina at the back of the eye, alongside the optic nerve.
Slit-Lamp Examination: An instrument resembling a microscope examines the structures of your eye, including the iris, cornea, and lens.
Intraocular Pressure Test: We’ll measure the pressure inside your eye using a small device to screen for glaucoma.
We may perform additional tests such as color vision or visual field testing based on findings or specific concerns. Your pediatric eye doctor in Marblehead will determine if these are necessary.
